Update on the Abramoff Fallout.

We haven’t heard much about the fallout from the arrest of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, but today I found a bit of an update. Abramoff is of course serving 6 years in prison for his activities on the Hill.

The FBI and Justice Department are investigating more than a dozen current and former law makers because of information gathered from the Abramoff investigation. All but two of the law makers are Republicans but this is understandable since Republicans have been in power and thus had the most to offer lobbyists.

The two Democrats are Representative William Jefferson of Louisiana. You will remember him best for the $90,000 found in his freezer. He was indicted on charges of bribery and fraud last month. The other Democrat is Representative Alan Mollohan of West Virginia who is being investigated over links between his real estate investments and non profits that he founded and supported with ear marks. Being from West Virginia I am familiar with Mollohan and not at all surprised as it was just a matter of time before he got his. What is ironic is Mollohan was the ranking Democrat on the House Ethics Committee until he stepped down last year due to pressure from this inquiry.

The Republicans are Rep. John Doolittle of California whose wife’s bookkeeping and event planning business. Apparently she received $65,000 from Abramoff and his lobbying associates. She also worked for her husband’s fund raising campaign and received 15 percent of all the donations she received. Mr. Doolittle announced that his association ended earlier this year.

The FBI raided the insurance office owned by the wife of Rep. Rick Renzi, R Arizona. seeking information about a multi-million dollar land deal involving a former business partner of Mr. Renzi. Mr. Renzi saepped down from his seat on the House Intelligence and Financial Services Committees. ((Don’t you just love how these crooks seem to be appointed to the perfect committees to further their own nefarious schemes?)

Representative Bob Ney, R. Ohio has already been found guilty and sent to prison as a result of his dealing with Abramoff. Representative Tom Feeney , R. Florida has acknowledged beiong contacted by the FBI involving his dealings with Abramoff and it isn’t looking good for him at this point.

It of course comes as no surprise that former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R. Texas and who was indicted for a state campaign finance fraud case is also under investigation for dealings with Abramoff. Again it seems the wife was used to bring home the bacon. Christine Delay apparently accepted payments from Abramoff and associates to her consulting firm. The FBI is trying to determine if she actually did any work for the money. Like Duh.

The only known Senator to be currently under investigation is Senator Ted Stevens who happens to be the longest serving Republican in the Senate and who is running for his seventh full term in 2008. You might recall the ear mark that got so much publicity as the “bridge to nowhere”? That was his baby. You might also recall that even after all the bad publicity Alaska still got the money and the bridge was built. Stevens is the ranking Republican member of the Appropriation Committee.

However there are now several inquiries that have resulted from the inquiries that have come as a result of the Abramoff investigation, making this the most far reaching investigation of the Washington lawmakers ever. Two such investigations involves two of the three members of Alaska’s Congressional delegation for accusations that they accepted illegal gifts from and oil services company.

Don’t you just love it when these house of cards come tumbling down? Of course they are all claiming to be innocent and this being the United States they will get their day in court and not just be taken out and hanged like they do in China when someone screws up.

Dear me, I just had one other thought, and this surely must be of great concern at least to those involved: If both husband and wife are sent to prison as just might be the case, I wonder how the feds will handle conjugal visitation rights?   BB

"Wisconsin Reveals Cost of Universal Health Care"

I have been keeping up with the proposed Wisconsin Universal Health care program for some time now. There have been a plethora of articles on the details, pros and cons, but I would suggest the following site to get a good background on the proposals. http://www.wisconsinhealthproject.org/plan/press.htm

Then go to today’s Washington Post Opinion Journal ( http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110010374 ) which has an excellent concise explanation of the costs of such a program that should be a must read for everyone who has been a proponent of Universal Health care. To say it is not going to be cheap is understated to the point of naiveté. The following figures are not those of the opposition, but those of the proponents of the plan so if anything they are optimistic. Even at that the plan as written to included “free” health care for every state resident under age 65 would cost an estimated $15.2 billion if implemented this year and then cost would escalate from there probably by double digits just as medical costs have since Medicare was implemented in 1965. However at 15.2 billion it is still $3 billion more than the state currently collects in ALL income, sales and corporate income taxes.

This first years estimated costs represents an average of $510 a month in higher taxes for every Wisconsin worker to cover the health cre costs only.  How much are you now paying for your families health care coverage? Now how much is your employer paying? If the Wisconsin plan goes thru as written employers will no longer provide health care coverage for their employees.   Some large union dominated companies who are providing gold lined coverage for their employees are only too happy to dump this burden on the tax payers, but smal;l companies will have a real hardship paying the extra corporate taxes being required even if they are no longer providing for their employees.

Let’s go back to the $3 billion more for just health care costs that Wisconsin residents will have to pay than the state is collecting currently with all of it’s tax resources. Think of that people. $3 billion more than all income now coming in to the state just for health care. Now add all the other costs of state government and you have a truly stupendous debt that tax payers will have to make up. It is estimated that each worker’s state tax liability will be at least 20% of income. This is not even mentioning federal payroll and income taxes you understand, or any other of the dozens of state and federal taxes that are tacked onto just about everything the politicos can think to tax. It is now estimated that the average worker pays out 40% of his income in state, federal and all the other "hidden"  taxes. If this is the case now then adding the additional 20% for health care to the resident of Wisconsin will have approximately 60% of their income going to taxes.

But wait! It gets better, or worse depending on your outlook. In order to get all the funds the state will need for the Universal Health care plus all the rest of State government the legislators are proposing : “Employees and businesses would pay for the plan by sharing the cost of a new 14.5% employment tax on wages. Wisconsin businesses would have to compete with out-of-state businesses and foreign rivals while shouldering a 29.8% combined federal-state payroll tax, nearly double the 15.3% payroll tax paid by non-Wisconsin firms for Social Security and Medicare combined.” With this burden how many new companies will find Wisconsin a good place to locate to or build a new plant? With this burden how many companies will decide to leave the state for new more business friendly locations?

And wait again, it gets better. You know all thos so called “hidden taxes , well hold on to your hate because Wisconsin legislators propose : “Governor Jim Doyle proposed and the ….. Senate has also approved, including a $1.25 a pack increase in the cigarette tax, a 10% hike in the corporate tax, and new fees on cars, trucks, hospitals, real estate transactions, oil companies and dry cleaners.”

Along with companies not relocating to Wisconsin, and others leaving the state, you better believe Wisconsin will become the home of choice for those who are chronically ill,  and a haven for free loaders. There is no clause that you must be employed to have this healthcare dividend, only that you be a resident for 12 months.

Please read this article. I do believe you will find it illuminating and perhaps then you will better see where some of us who are opposed to universal healthcare are coming from. Then perhaps we all can get together and find a program that will care for our neediest while not beggaring ourselves and bankrupting our nation. Sincerely, BB

Does White Guilt Blinds Us to the Nature of Islamic Extremism?

Shelby Steele, a Black man and acknowledged authority on race relations in America, the study of race relations, multiculturalism, and affirmative action.  Mr. Steele has held a Fellowship at the Hoover Instituted since 1994. I have been an ardent reader of Mr. Steel’s works for years. At times my own opinions differ from his, but more often I must agree. There is no sense in me giving his bio in this post since you can just google his name and learn a great deal about him. And, please do for he is a man to know and read no matter what your position is on race relations.

In this posts I want to explore his article on Western guilt or White Guilt  which he claims “blinds us to the nature of Islamic extremism.”

Life and Death   BY SHELBY STEELE
Sunday, August 27, 2006 12:01 a.m. EDT

“White guilt in the West--especially in Europe and on the American left--confuses all this by seeing Islamic extremism as a response to oppression. The West is so terrified of being charged with its old sins of racism, imperialism and colonialism that it makes oppression an automatic prism on the non-Western world, a politeness. But Islamic extremists don't hate the West because they are oppressed by it. They hate it precisely because the end of oppression and colonialism, not their continuance, forced the Muslim world to compete with the West. Less oppression, not more, opened this world to the sense of defeat that turned into extremism.”

Mr. Steele explains that Islamic hatred of the Jew and the Infidel is in reality a self hatred, an admission that Muslims as a people are less capable, less worthy and perhaps less worthy in God’s eyes. This hatred and sublimated self hatred began not with colonialism, but after. After the West left the Muslims territory and took with them the enthusiasm to move into the future.

One picture I saw years ago has stuck with me and I think exemplifies the concept Mr. Steele is explaining. The photograph was of a modern airport with a jet plane taking off in the background and a man on a camel in the foreground. I remember the caption suggested the photo was representative of East meeting West. I disagreed as I saw it as man’s advancing towards the future but still being held back by the past. The East is mired down in the past and incapable of moving into the future because they are unwilling to let loose of the past. The old ways, the old beliefs hold them captive while they envy the West the modernism that makes life more comfortable.

Islamic Extremism then is not a desire for territory or to address grievances because all attempts to return territory or to address grievances has been scorned. To accept territory and to accept reparations for grievances would require the Muslims then to do something with the territory and reparation. To do something they see themselves incapable of doing. Instead they set themselves the task of doing what can not be seen or measured by humanity. Islamic Extremism is an attempt to prove Muslims hatred of the Infidel makes them more worthy in God’s eyes. They scorn life and embrace death (which they claim is following God's dictates) as proof that they are superior to the life loving Infidel.

*************************************************************************

Once the above concept is accepted it is an easy step to understanding why the West is incapable of understanding the East and therefore are conducting the war m with Muslims Terrorist on a false premise. A false premise of White guilt for slavery, for colonialism, for being superior in the world today. To augment this overall White Guilt we in the West have our own left thinking individuals who are our own worst enemies and continually and erroneously pricking the collective conscious. These actions and beliefs from our own Left then makes legitimate the East’s claim of oppression.

(This article was written during the Israeli and Hezballah War so examples are geared to that particular period.) “Over and over, white guilt turns the disparity in development between Israel and her neighbors into a case of Western bigotry. This despite the fact that Islamic extremism is the most explicit and dangerous expression of human bigotry since the Nazi era. Israel's historical contradiction, her torture, is to be a Western nation whose efforts to survive trap her in the moral mazes of white guilt. Its national defense will forever be white aggression.” And the same applies today to our war in Iraq.

Furthermore, Steele points out that the West’s White Guilt is the East’s most dangerous weapon and the one thing that will , if not overcome, allow the terrorism to continue to live and grow unless we understand we are not to blame and finally force the East to see their own culpability and use our superior might to finally defeat terrorism.  Steele claims our White Guilt is forcing us to tolerate and actually lose wars to the Muslims.

“But white guilt's most dangerous suppression is to keep from discussion the most conspicuous reality in the Middle East: that the Islamic world long ago fell out of history. Islamic extremism is the saber-rattling of an inferiority complex. America has done a good thing in launching democracy as a new ideal in this region. Here is the possibility, if still quite remote, for the Islamic world to seek power through contribution rather than through menace.”

Something to think about , isn't it?  BB

North Carolina's Own "Little Giant" in Congress.

Mary Ann Akers Washington Post The Sleuth

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/sleuth/?referrer=email&referrer=email&referrer=email

“Do Tell: The Youngest Member of Congress, Rep. Patrick McHenry"

"In this installment of "Do Tell," we profile Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), the Jack Russell Terrier of the House Republican Conference. As feisty as he is small (he's 5 feet 3 inches or something; he doesn't measure), McHenry is one of his party's chief attack dogs on the House floor, generally raising hell and employing whatever parliamentary tactic he can to obstruct the Democratic majority's legislation.”

The above is the first paragraph of today’s The Sleuth featuring North Carolina’s Rep. Patrick McHenry, and there is also a video. If you don’t know of, and haven’t been following, the antics of North Carolina’s “Little Giant” Representative Patrick McHenry in Congress you really should start. He is a dynamo in action and has the Democrats representatives gnashing their teeth when he takes the floor. The Speaker does his best to ignore him but McHenry is persistent and eventually gets his say. He has taken on the Democrats toughest debater, Barney Frank and held his own admirably.

Rep. McHenry enjoys his roll as his party's 'spoiler" but that doesn't make him a party hack.  He has his own mind and follows his own dictates when voting often against the party lines.  Makes you proud to watch this man and know he is a North Carolinian and perhaps the beginning of a new breed of politician in  Washington.   We can only hope! BB
